Printable Word Scramble Worksheet
A free printable word scramble worksheet — pick a grade level from Kindergarten to Year 6 for randomised words and jumbled letter orders, or type your own words, with an optional answer key, printed at exact scale.
A word scramble (or jumble) mixes up the letters of a word so the child has to work out the original — a quick, fun way to build spelling, phonics and vocabulary. This worksheet lays out a numbered list of scrambled words, each with a blank line to write the answer. Choose a grade level from Kindergarten through Year 6 and it draws an age-appropriate set and jumbles the letters for you.
The word lists use the classic Dolch lists for Kindergarten to Year 3 and common Fry high-frequency words for Years 4 to 6 (only words of three letters or more, since shorter words don't scramble well). Press Shuffle to draw a fresh set of words and re-randomise every letter order, so no two printouts are the same — ideal for a whole class or repeated practice. Or switch to 'type my own' to scramble any words you like: this week's spelling list, topic vocabulary or a child's tricky words. Set the number of rows, number the rows, add an optional answer key at the foot of the page, choose your accent colour, and print at exact scale in portrait or landscape.
Printing at exact scale
Every sheet is drawn in real millimetres and prints at exact physical scale. For accurate output, set Scale = 100% (Actual size) and Margins = None in your browser's print dialog. Not sure your printer is honest? Run the printer ruler test first to confirm 50 mm really measures 50 mm.
Frequently asked questions
Which grade levels are included?
Kindergarten through Year 6. Kindergarten to Year 3 use the classic Dolch sight-word lists; Years 4 to 6 use common Fry high-frequency words for older readers. Only words of three or more letters are used so every word makes a proper scramble.
Can I use my own words?
Yes — choose 'Type my own' and enter any words, one per line or separated by commas. The letters are scrambled for you automatically, so you can make a scramble from this week's spelling or topic list in seconds.
How do I get new words and new scrambles?
Press the Shuffle button. It draws a fresh random selection from the grade list and re-randomises the letter order of every word, so you can print a different puzzle each time or one puzzle per child.
Is there an answer key?
Yes — tick 'Print answer key' to add a small numbered list of the un-jumbled answers at the bottom of the page. Leave it off to print just the puzzle.
How many words fit on a page?
You choose from 1 up to 20 rows. If a grade list or your own list has fewer words than the number of rows, the sheet uses as many as are available and tells you the count.
Is it really free?
Yes. Every template on printsheet.io is completely free, with no sign-up, no account and no watermark. Generate as many sheets as you like.
How do I get an exact-scale print?
Choose your paper size, then in the print dialog set Scale to 100% or “Actual size” and Margins to None. The sheet is defined in real millimetres, so it prints at true size. Use the calibration ruler page to verify.
Which paper sizes are supported?
A4, A5, A3, A6, US Letter, Legal and Tabloid, in portrait or landscape. Pick the size that matches the paper loaded in your printer.
Can I save it as a PDF instead of printing?
Yes — choose “Save as PDF” as the printer in your browser's print dialog. The PDF keeps the exact millimetre dimensions.
