Fill in the missing letter is a classic spelling and phonics activity: a word is shown with one or more letters replaced by a blank, and the child works out which letter belongs there. It builds letter–sound knowledge, spelling patterns and word recognition, and it scales beautifully — hide a single vowel for early readers, or blank out half the word for a real challenge.
The graded word lists use the classic Dolch lists for Kindergarten to Year 3 and common Fry high-frequency words for Years 4 to 6 (words of three letters or more). Choose how many letters go missing per word — one, two, roughly a third or about half — and where the blanks fall: anywhere, vowels only, or always the first or last letter. Printing at exact scale
Every sheet is drawn in real millimetres and prints at exact physical scale. For accurate output, set Scale = 100% (Actual size) and Margins = None in your browser's print dialog. Frequently asked questions
Which grade levels are included?
Kindergarten through Year 6. Kindergarten to Year 3 use the classic Dolch sight-word lists; Years 4 to 6 use common Fry high-frequency words for older readers. Only words of three or more letters are used so there is always a letter left showing.
How many letters can I hide?
Choose one letter, two letters, roughly 30% of the letters, or about half. Every word always keeps at least one letter visible, and shorter words automatically hide fewer letters so they stay solvable.
Can I control which letters go missing?
Yes — pick 'Anywhere', 'Vowels only' to hide just a, e, i, o and u (great for phonics), or always blank the first or last letter.
Can I use my own words?
Yes — choose 'Type my own' and enter any words, one per line or separated by commas. Letters are blanked out for you automatically, so you can build a sheet from this week's spelling or topic list in seconds.
What is the word bank for?
Ticking 'Print a word bank' lists all the answers, shuffled, at the top of the page. It turns the sheet into an easier matching activity for younger children — leave it off for a harder, from-memory version.
Is there an answer key?
Yes — tick 'Print answer key' to add a small numbered list of the complete words at the bottom of the page for quick marking.
How many words fit on a page?
You choose from 1 up to 20 rows. If a grade list or your own list has fewer words than the number of rows, the sheet uses as many as are available and tells you the count.

How do I get an exact-scale print?
Choose your paper size, then in the print dialog set Scale to 100% or “Actual size” and Margins to None. The sheet is defined in real millimetres, so it prints at true size. Use the calibration ruler page to verify.
